Botox® is a brand of neurotoxin used for both aesthetic and therapeutic treatments; most notably Botox® is used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. However it can also be used to treat conditions such as chronic migraine, neck spasms (cervical dystonia), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), an overactive bladder, lazy eye or to relieve symptoms following a stroke.

HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?

Botox® is derived from Botulinum Toxin, a naturally occurring protein that blocks the nerve signals in the area treated; temporarily reducing or stopping the contraction of the muscle allowing it to relax. Botox® has been used in hospitals in the UK since 1977 and in the medical aesthetic sector for over 20 years. It was the first neurotoxin to be approved by the FDA for use on lines and wrinkles in 1989 and now has the most approved indications out of all the toxins available. There have been over 500 peer-reviewed articles over the last 16 years emphasising its safety and efficacy, making it a world leader amongst the toxins available on the market.

Botox® is a prescription only medication and it is a legal requirement that you see a clinician with a prescribing qualification face-to-face before your prescription is written and ordered from the pharmacy. Abbey is our resident Independent Nurse Prescriber at The Aesthetics Hub in Liverpool and will see you for your initial consultation in order to determine your suitability for this particular treatment.

Here at The Aesthetics Hub in Liverpool, Botox® can be used in the upper and lower face, to achieve the nepherititi neck lift or a brow lift, in the treatment of hyperhidrosis or underarm sweating and also jawline slimming.

BOTOX®
CASE STUDY

This patient has been having Botox® treatments to her frown and forehead lines over a 6 year period with regular maintenance treatments every 5-6 months. Her before photo shows the furrows between the eyebrows, generally shaped like the number 11 when asked to frown. On the after picture you will see when the patient is asked to do the same expression that these furrows have disappeared and the muscle is now relaxed.

FAQs

  • How long does Botox® last?

Botox® longevity can vary from person to person. Research data shows that by week 6 (post initial treatment) movement can start to recover within the muscle although lines are usually not as prominent at this point as before treatment with it being safe to have a repeat maintenance treatment from week 12.

In practice however we find some patients return at week 12, others at 6 months but the majority between 4-5 months. We recommend regular treatments (between 3-4 months) in your first year in order to try to increase time between treatments thereafter.

  • What are the most common side effects of Botox®?

As with any medicine there are side-effects associated with Botox®

Most common side effects of Botox® injections include redness and swelling at the site of injection, bruising, tenderness, headaches and a change in brow height or shape.Other less common side effects include droopy eyelids, numbness, rash, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing and allergic reactions. However all side effects will be discussed in full during you consultation.

  • Where does Botox® go once it enters the body?

After injection, Botox® blocks the synapses of the desired muscles.  Once the protein stops functioning at the neuromuscular junction, it is broken down into its harmless components (amino acids) and either recycled for use in other proteins or excreted by the kidneys.
