Microneedling is a natural skin regeneration and scar repair treatment, which can over time, with repeated treatments, stimulate collagen production so that skin grows back firmer, stronger, and smoother than before, reducing the appearance of scarring and improving the quality of the skin.

HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING REDUCE SCARRING?

Scarring is the body’s natural response to a skin injury when the body attempts to form new collagen fibres to heal an affected area, but produces either too much or too little. This creates differences in texture from the surrounding skin.
Microneedling stimulates the collagen production so that skin grows back firmer, stronger, and smoother than before.
The Derma FNS microneedling pen uses a unique method to insert fine needles into the epidermis to encourage collagen production. Unlike other microneedling treatments, this pen vertically penetrates the skin, which produces less skin damage (less pain and redness), but with the same effective results as other treatments. The vertical insertions create thousands of tiny holes in the skin causing the release of serum growth factors which stimulate the breakdown of old fibrous collagen and stimulates new collagen and elastin development.

ACNE SCARRING AND MICRONEEDLING BEFORE AND AFTER

This 30 year old patient presented in clinic with acne scarring resulting from years of troublesome acne as a teenager. Her main aim was to see an improvement in this scarring in time for her wedding the following year. We used a combination of 6 Microneedling sessions in combination with Mandelic Peels across the full face and introduced some Obagi Skincare into her daily skin routine to achieve these results.

FAQs

  • Can I have microneedling for scarring if I have active acne?

    Microneedling can be used to treat acne scarring but if a patient has active acne, we need to treat this first before microneedling. However, as an alternative, if you have active acne you can be treated with IPL acne treatment instead. 

    Other issues that may prevent a medical microneedling treatment include poor skin health, keloid scarring or certain medical conditions.

  • How often should I have a microneedling treatment for my scars?

    Microneedling is usually repeated every 4-6 weeks although in some cases you may be invited back to your appointments between 2-4 weeks depending on your treatment plan. Often a course of 3-6 treatments will be required to improve the appearance of scars.

  • What are the side effects of microneedling?

    On the whole microneedling is considered a safe treatment. As with all treatmenrs, the risks and side-effects will be discussed during your consultation. Some common risks include, redness, peeling, sensitivity and swelling, which usually settles within the first 24-48 hours.  

  • Can I have microneedling to treat my stretch marks?

    Yes, the appearance of stretch marks can improve following a course of microneedling treatments. Your stretchmarks will need to be assessed by one of our clinicians at your skin consultation.
