Vertical Lines Around the Mouth

TREATING "SMOKERS" LINES WITH DERMAL FILLER

Also referred to as "barcode lines"; the medical term is "perioral lines" and we can treat this delicate area with a combination of treatments including dermal filler. These lines can often start as fine, feathered lines, but become deeper over time. It can be very difficult to conceal these lines and patients often complain of lipstick bleeding when they attend our clinic in Crosby.

WHAT ARE PERIORAL LINES?

These lines are vertical lines that appear from the border of the lip extending up towards the nose or down towards the chin. We may also see a horizontal line that runs across the philtrim, underneath the nostrils particularly when speaking.

WHAT CAUSES VERTICAL LINES AROUND THE MOUTH?

There are several reasons why perioral lines form; Intrinsic ageing, which leads to loss of collagen, hyaluronic acid and a decreased skin tone. The muscle surrounding the area which we use consistently for eating, drinking and talking, becomes tired. Fat layers and bone density in the area reduce with age, which results in loss of elasticity and support for the tissues in the area. Extrinsic factors such as UV exposure, sun-bed use and smoking also contribute to increased ageing in the skin.

HOW DO WE TREAT VERTICAL LINES AROUND THE MOUTH?

Assessment of the patient needs to be made both at rest and on animation and involves the whole face, not just this small area.  Using an appropriate dermal filler and the correct technique, the tissues can be supported and the skin rehydrated, reducing the lines in order to improve the appearance of the area without looking overfilled but instead creating a natural result.
