Botox® works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother. Allergans' Botox® has been used extensively throughout medicine and was the first drug to be licensed to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles.

HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?

Botox® is a natural purified protein that partially blocks the nerve impulses and reduces contractions in the muscles where it is injected. When injected into the facial muscles, they relax and lines and wrinkles reduce, leading to a smoother appearance. A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment. Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines.

Results are temporary, but with regular treatments every 3-4 months patients see ongoing improvement in skin texture and a reduction in lines and wrinkles.

Every Botox® patient requires a face-to-face consultation with our Independent Nurse prescriber before a treatment can take place (as per the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines).

Indications for Upper and Lower Face Botox

  • Indications for Upper & Lower Face Botox®

Licensed indications for Botox® treatments include the upper face:

    Frown Lines:

Vertical Lines between the eyebrows, often called elevenses due their shape being similar to the number 11.

    Forehead Lines:

Horizontal furrows across the forehead that usually appear when raising your eyebrows.

    Crows Feet:

Wrinkles around the eyes, referred to as "smile lines". These lines are often the first to appear due to repeated muscle movement, reduction in elastin and collagen production and naturally lower hydration levels in this delicate region.

Other areas that can be treated off license include the following lower face indications:

    Brow Lift:

Using specific muscles in the upper face we can create a small brow lift in the right candidate. Find out more here

    Gummy Smile:

Around 15% of people suffer from a gummy smile, where there is an excessive display of gum on show when smiling.

    Cobblestone Chin:

The appearance of a "bobbly" or "orange peel" chin which can be exaggerated with certain expressions and lead to an asymmetrical appearance, it is caused by an overactive mentalis muscle.

    Downturned Smile:

The muscles in the area below the corners of the mouth can start to pull down as we age. This gives the appearance of a sad or angry appearance, even when expressing happiness.

    Jawline Slimming:

Often the size of the masseter muscle can increase in size with repeated movements such as chewing (gum), teeth grinding (bruxism)or clenching teeth resulting in a wide square jaw. This can be seen as a masculine trait and some women seek to slim the jawline to reduce this appearance.

BOTOX® CASE STUDY

This 37 year old patient had concerns regarding the frown and forehead lines when she first met Abbey 10 years ago. Abbey titrated her dose accordingly in order for her to achieve the best results and now rarely attends for a review appointment, although it's always lovely to see her. You will see on the after photo that this patient furrows are drastically reduced yet she is still able to raise her eyebrows, creating a more natural result.

FAQs

  • Can you stop Botox® once you start?

Yes, Botox is a temporary treatment, if you decide not to continue with your Botox treatments, your muscles will become stronger, wrinkles will re-appear, becoming deeper in time and you will age in the normal way.

  • How long does it take for Botox® to work?

Botox® usually starts to take effect from around 3-5 days following initial treatment, although the full effects may not be seen until 4 weeks post treatment.

  • Is 50 too late for Botox®?

No, the licensed indication for the use of Botox is 65 years old, however in can be used on patients older than 65 off-license. All patients present differently and during your consultation we will discuss your suitability for treatment. Providing there are no contraindications there is no reason why, at 50 you can't benefit from the effects of a Botox® treatment.
