Underarm sweating (also known as hyperhidrosis) can be an embarrassing problem that can affect as many as 1 in every 100. Botox® is a popular treatment for this concern and research has shown that results can last up to 201 days.
Underarm sweating for many often feels like the body has gone into overdrive, producing more sweat than what is actually required to regulate the body temperature.
How do you stop underarm sweating?
Although there are many treatments available ranging from special antiperspirants to surgery, Botox® is a very popular treatment for underarm sweating, particularly when people have exhausted other treatment options. Botox® is the only Botulinum Toxin Type A that is licensed in the UK for this indication and is a proven treatment option for severe underarm sweating. Therefore Botox® is used at our clinic in Liverpool when treating underarm sweating.
How do Botox® treatments for underarm sweating work?
Botox® treatments under the arm temporarily block the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands resulting in reduced sweating.
Sweat will not be produced in the area treated however it will continue to be produced elsewhere in the body as normal.
How quickly can I stop underarm sweating?
Following treatment for underarm sweating with Botox®, patients can expect to see a significant reduction in underarm sweating within 4 weeks. A review of the area will be arranged in order to follow-up the patient and assess success.
Research has shown that results can last up to 201 days (6.7 months), however individual results may vary and as this is only a temporary treatment it is important to know that symptoms will return gradually when you are ready for your next treatment.
Botox® is a prescription-only medicine, all patients are required to have a face-to-face consultation with our Independent Nurse Prescriber before a treatment can take place (as per the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines).
