Gummy smile treatments aim to temporarily improve the appearance of a person’s smile by reducing the amount of gum showing and creating a fuller appearance in the lips.
A smile illuminates a person’s face, it can lift their mood, strengthen the immune system and is often considered contagious!
For some, there can be an imbalance between the gums and the upper lip. Often when these patients smile, excess gum becomes visible and sometimes the teeth can be seen even when the patient is not smiling. This can lead to a lack of confidence for many, with some patients too embarrassed to smile. Traditionally, Dentists have used periodontal surgery to treat gummy smiles, however there are now very effective non-surgical treatment alternatives. These non-surgical options are less painful, not as traumatic and cheaper.
How do Gummy Smile treatments work?
If the cause is due to over-contraction of the elevating muscle this is weakened with Botulinum toxin (Botox®) injections or dermal filler injections in the nasolabial area. Following treatment, the top lip will then not lift quite as high when smiling, resulting in less exposure of the gums. All other facial expressions remain the same, ensuring a natural and subtle result. Botox® injections in this area can also be combined with lip filler treatments to carefully enhance the lip further.
Other causes of gummy smile may require alternative treatments, therefore, in order to ascertain the correct treatment of the Gummy Smile all patients are required to have a Consultation with our Independent Nurse Prescriber at our aesthetic clinic in Liverpool before a treatment can take place (as per the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines).
All patients will attend a review 3-4 weeks following treatment to reassess the area and the results.
As with other Botox® and dermal filler treatments, this is a temporary treatment and patients will need to be re-treated every 4 to 6 months to maintain their results.
The patient below had a subtle gummy smile but was extremely concerned about the amount of teeth on show when she smiled. A combination treatment incorporating Botox® and lip filler injections were used in this case. As you can see in the second picture, the lip has relaxed with less of her teeth visible and lips appear fuller when smiling. Find out more by hovering over the image and icons below:
