Microneedling to combat signs of ageing – is it underrated?

Abbey McLaughlin

The pursuit of plump, wrinkle-free, flawless skin is relentless, and new anti-ageing treatments being introduced all the time.

Treatments that address the signs of ageing are extremely popular, with wrinkle-reducing injections being the go-to treatments for over a decade.
These treatments deserve their popularity; they are kings of the anti-ageing sector for a reason: they are effective and reliable.
But there are new kids on the block that can produce great, skin-plumping results and are minimally invasive – and they are now demanding their time in the spotlight.
Some microneedling fans claim it works far better for them than anti-wrinkle injectables and swear by its effectiveness.

Microneedling – how does it work?
Microneedling is a procedure that uses tiny needles to puncture the skin, via a roller or pen like device. The device only punctures the skin’s top layer and doesn’t penetrate the epidermis. Microneedling is also known as dermal rolling, collagen induction therapy, or percutaneous collagen induction.
The fine needles cause the skin to repair its wounds, meaning that it stimulates collagen and elastin growth. The treatment is suitable for skin tightening, lifting and rejuvenation, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and minimising pore size, and it has also shown fantastic results in the treatment of scars and stretchmarks.
Furthermore, it causes the skin only minimal trauma – and is gentler than chemical peels and laser treatments.

The effects
Typically, microneedling is carried out in intervals of 4 to 6 weeks, with 3 or 4 treatments necessary to achieve optimum results, but it is dependent on the individual. Boosting collagen and elastin takes time, and it can take up to a year to see the full effects, but improvement in the skin is often seen as early as two weeks post treatment, and the new collagen will last for several years.

The verdict
Microneedling is perhaps overlooked by those who’ve always opted for wrinkle-reducing injections, but microneedling is a safe, effective treatment that has little or no down time and has long-lasting results. It is good for all skintypes, and after the application of numbing cream, it is not generally painful. Microneedling certainly makes a great case for being included in your anti-ageing armoury.
